Greetings Friends of the Prairie,

NEWS

Last year CPPF purchased a lot full of trees on the west side of Lakeshore Drive in the 9500 block. Because it was the last privately owned vacant lot in a large prairie block, it was a critical buy. However, it had a total of 52 trees on it! While our volunteers do chainsaw work, this was a bit too much to cut and remove, so Tree Frog Service to the rescue with their trucks, skid loader, chipper, saws and non-profit discount. They worked in some of that bitter cold in December and finished last week. We are anxious to see what of the prairie seed bank pops up next Spring and Summer. (Please see before and after photos.)

Those of you who have teenagers or know young people, volunteering at our workdays counts toward high school community service requirements. If under 18 years, a permission form is required. Email or call for more information.

We welcome two new members to the CPPF board of directors, Jaime Johnson and Mark Lange. Both live in the Chiwaukee neighborhood, chose the area because of the Prairie, and have talents and time they want to devote to our mission. WELCOME!

WORKDAYS
Volunteers at the December workday cut down and herbicided the mini-forest of sumac spreading north and west of the DNR weather station on 1st Court, plus acres of scattered buckthorn. This Saturday, January 20, we again will be cutting and herbiciding invasive brush. The prediction is for a cloudy, breezy day with a high of 41 degrees! Consider boots as it may be muddy after the snow melt. We supply work gloves, tools, instruction, water and answers to all your questions about the Prairie. The workday is from 10 AM to 1 PM. Come for part or all of it.
We will meet on 2nd Avenue at 121st Street.

Workday cancellations will be posted on our website and Facebook by 8 AM on scheduled workdays. If you are unsure whether a workday will take place, please use good judgment when deciding whether to attend.

If you have questions, email volunteer@chiwaukee.org or call 262-658-8336.
